What Glendora Homeowners Need to Know about California’s New Water Laws in 2020

Saturday, March 14th, 2020

The new water laws that went into effect in California this year were passed to make water conservation a way of life for California residents. Although not everyone agrees with the new laws, we want you to know how these laws affect you. The good news is that the restrictions aren’t going to subject households to outrageous fees and fines. Those are just rumors.

Keep reading to learn more about the new water restriction laws and what they really mean for you and for California.

The 411 on Water Restriction Laws

Many California residents, including those in Glendora, are confused about the new water laws. Most of this confusion comes from false information that the media is circulating. So, to clear things up, here is a brief fact lists about California’s new water laws:

  • Water agencies throughout California are being required to set area standards annually. These standards are based on indoor and outdoor residential water use and includes institutional, industrial, and commercial irrigation.
  • Agencies can be fined, but not individuals. This is a sigh of relief for many people. The fines will be imposed on agencies by the State Water Board who don’t meet cumulative standards. The fines can be as much as $10,000 per day.
  • The water restriction laws were put in place to help California residents meet a target water-use of 55 gallons per day, per person. Don’t worry though. This is just a target number and it’s not enforceable. It’s being used as a way to calculate the efficiency standard. Also, although you might have heard differently, the target water-use standard doesn’t go into effect until 2023.

How Do the Water Restriction Laws Affect You?

The bottom line is most people won’t notice a difference in how they use or are charged for water service. There aren’t going to be fines issued for going over the target standard when this goes into effect. Your water usage won’t be strictly monitored. It’s really just the water suppliers who are affected by the new laws.

That being said, at Glendora Primo Plumbing, we take water conservation seriously. We know you do too. This is why we encourage homeowners to be conscious about how they use their water and take care of plumbing problems that waste water. Repairing leaky pipes, fixing running toilets, and installing low-flow plumbing fixtures are great ways to keep water usage in check.

5 Tips to Get Hot Water Faster

Thursday, February 13th, 2020

Does it seem like it takes forever for your hot water to heat up? This is a concern for many of our customers here in Glendora. That’s why we’ve put together this post to give you our best tips for getting hot water faster.

Check the Thermostat Setting

When it seems like the water doesn’t heat up fast enough or stay heated long enough, first check your water heater’s thermostat. You’ll find this device on the outside of the water heater near the bottom. Depending on your water heater you’ll either see “low,” “medium,” “hot,” or “very hot” or you’ll see degree settings in Fahrenheit.

Most water heater manufacturers recommend the thermostat be turned to low or medium or no hotter than 125 degrees Fahrenheit. These temperature settings reduce the risk of scalding. However, these settings might not be right for you. Change the thermostat settings and test the water carefully.

Insulate Your Pipes

Heat loss occurs when the water has to travel long distances from the water heater to the fixture. You don’t have to live in a cold climate for heat loss to happen. Heat loss can be a problem in older homes because pipes have small cracks or have started to wear thin in some places. Ask your plumber for recommendations if you’re considering insulating your pipes.

Install a Tankless Water Heater

Tank water heaters release so much hot water before they have to reheat again. Tankless water heaters heat the water on demand. Therefore, water from kitchen and bathroom faucets heat faster.

Keep in mind that the water does have to travel from the tankless heater to the fixtures. Therefore, heat loss can still occur. If you’re concerned about this, check out the next tip.

Install Water Heater Booster

This device is installed on your water heater. It’s designed to double the amount of hot water. Ask your plumber how this device could work for your situation.

Flush Your Water Heater

Another reason your water doesn’t heat fast enough could be an issue with sediment buildup in the water heater. When calcium and magnesium particles collect in your water heater, this can cause the water heater to heat water less efficiently. You’ll get lukewarm water at best.

The good news is that flushing the water heater a few times can get rid of years of built up sediment. Yearly water heater flushing is recommended to keep your water heater working well for many years.

Landscaping Tips to Avoid Emergency Sewer Repair

Wednesday, January 25th, 2017

Precise, affordable emergency sewer repair in Glendora, CA, by plumbers near you.Is your home’s sewer line at risk of failure because of landscaping choices you made? Many homes in the Glendora area have older trees and bushes on their properties that may have roots that have grown into the sewer line, which can create cracks. When a sewer line fails, toilets won’t flush, shower and bathtub drains become clogged, and you may experience raw sewage backing up into sinks and floor drains in your home. At Glendora Primo Plumbing, we know it’s important to take care of your home’s main line. Here are some landscaping tips to help you avoid emergency sewer repair.

Plan Before You Plant

If you’re planting new trees or bushes, take the time to locate the sewer line in your yard. To find the line, look for the sewer cleanout. Once you locate the line, be mindful of where you plant. Plant bushes and trees at least 10 feet from the line. This is the minimum distance recommended by licensed plumbers to prevent root intrusion. The farther away you plant from the sewer line, the better because large trees have extensive root systems that develop massive horizontal spread as they grow.

Consider Root Barriers

Chances are if you have a sidewalk on your property, you already have root barriers. Municipalities install these contraptions to keep root intrusion from affecting sidewalks. However, because the sewer line on your property is technically your responsibility to maintain, there are probably not root barriers installed. If you have an older home with large trees on the property that are close to the sewer line, consider installing root barriers to prevent future problems.

Remove Existing Trees

It’s not something that’s easy to consider, but if you own an older property with large trees that are close to the sewer line, you may want to consider removal. Removing a tree isn’t an easy task and it can be heartbreaking to cut down a tree that isn’t diseased or otherwise damaged. However, the cost to remove a tree is much less expensive than dealing with complete sewer pipe replacement, which can extend into the tens of thousands.

With a little bit of preventive maintenance it is possible to avoid emergency drain service. At Glendora Primo Plumbing, we know that a little TLC can go a long way toward extending the life of your drains and pipes. It can also save you a lot of money.

Spend Money on Professional Drain Cleaning

Every day hair, soap scum, grease, food, and other substances pass through the drains in your home. After years of usage without professional drain cleaning, debris can begin to accumulate in the pipes. You may not be experiencing any problems now, but trust us. If you haven’t had a drain cleaning plumber visit your home recently, a potential emergency is just around the corner.

Professional drain cleaning services aren’t expensive. In fact, at Glendora Primo Plumbing, we run drain cleaning specials all the time that include the use of the hydro jet and a drain inspection camera. Spending a little bit of money to keep your drains clear is nothing compared to the expense of pipe replacement or water damage restoration.

Educate Your Family on Waste Disposal Methods

Just because it looks like the kitchen sink and toilet are tough enough to handle whatever you throw at it doesn’t mean you should. Both of these plumbing fixtures are delicate and are designed only to accept certain things. For example, only toilet paper should be flushed. You may think there isn’t much difference between toilet tissue and paper towels or facial tissues, but there is.

Likewise, your kitchen sink isn’t designed to accept food scraps, grease or fat. These items can quickly build up and lead to impenetrable clogs. Save food scraps for the garbage disposal and dispose of grease or fat in a glass container.

Call Right Away for Emergency Drain Service

If you find yourself in need of a Glendora plumber now, call us first for emergency drain service in Glendora. We’ll get a plumber to your house in less than 90 minutes and use the latest equipment to make sure clogs are taken care of completely.

What to Look for When Identifying Sewer Line Repair Needs?

Thursday, October 27th, 2016

Glendora, CA plumbers available around the clock for residential plumbing and sewer line repairWhen it comes to issues with your Glendora home or business, do you believe that problems are an inevitable part of property ownership or do you feel that almost all catastrophes are preventable? At Glendora Primo Plumbing, we believe an annual inspection and regular maintenance are your best defenses against our area of expertise, sewer line repair.

Technically, there is a third component to that defense strategy which is responsible ownership. Part of being a responsible home or business owner involves scheduling these regular inspections but the rest involves being vigilant. When it comes to preventing sewer line problems, being vigilant means being aware – specifically for these signs:

First and Foremost, Schedule the Inspection

Your home or business plumbing isn’t usually just going to fail at random one day. Instead it’s most often the effects of hard wear and tear over decades that finally causes the need for sewer line repair. Although you should still be aware of the condition of your sewer system, many developing problems can be detected during the annual maintenance and inspection.

Notice Changes in Your Sewer System

Your biggest notification of sewer line issues is going to be slow drains or backups. These are things that could actually occur at random, mostly because somebody tried flushing towels, baby wipes, or prophylactics down the toilet.

Odors and Mold

The path that your sewage line takes outside does many times run through your home so look for any odors or mold growing behind walls that could signify leaks in the pipes.

Plush Lawn

Ideally you’ll want your grass to be as green as possible but not when it’s because of a sewage line leak. Sewage is a fertilizer so a patch of extra plush grass may be forming because of underground leaks.

There are many other warning signs which could include sinkholes and indentations in your yard or cracks in your foundation from your house shifting. When in doubt, give Glendora Primo Plumbing a call for a sound peace of mind.
